The CORONET Artificial Anterior Chamber has been designed to be used with any of the CORONET standard hand held trephines and is unique in concept in that one chamber fits all sizes of donor graft - ONE SIZE FITS ALL.

The Artificial Anterior Chamber allows the donor cornea material to be supported on a chamber of balanced salt solution, the pressure of which can be varied to recreate the required intraocular pressure. This permits the surgeon to cut the donor button from the epithelial surface, which directly mirrors the cut on the recipient cornea and so the donor button will have a similar wound architecture to that of the recipient. Cutting the donor button from the epithelial surface also reduces potential damage to delicate endothelial tissues and facilitates better approximation with the recipient cornea, which in turn reduces the likelihood of post-operative scarring and astigmatism.

Functional Characteristics

  • The chamber is suitable for any size donor graft tissue from 14.5mm through to 18mm
  • Two tissue retaining heads are supplied with the chamber:

Small to accommodate graft tissue 14.50mm - 16.00mm

Large to accommodate graft tissue 17.00mm - 18.00mm
  • The components of the artificial chamber separate to allow the corneal graft tissue to be placed over a chamber into which the balance salt solution can flow and create a pressure sufficient to support the tissue
  • The pressure created in the chamber is similar to that of the natural eye. The tissue is clamped into position on the top of the pedestal by the tissue retainer, which grips the tissue gently around the scleral ring and seals the chamber so that the balanced salt solution cannot escape
  • The compression ring holds the retainer securely in place while the surgeon carries out the procedure
  • The pressure within the chamber can be varied by adjusting the height of the infusion bag on the stand and clamping off the flow once the required pressure has been achieved
  • The chamber can be used safely with any of the CORONET hand-held trephines
  • Once the cut has been achieved to the surgeons’ satisfaction, it may be completed with a diamond knife
